Wednesday, January 7, 2026 #WomenWednesday – Christy Nicholson Meet Christy Nicholson, a proud Local 63 member and fourth-year carpenter apprentice employed by Nason Contracting Group Ltd. Blogs National From a young age, Christy loved building. So, it’s no surprise she took three years of shop in high school and later pursued a pretrades program at 20 to become a carpenter. At a time when there weren’t many women in the trades, Christy still found inspiration and camaraderie through coworkers like Octavia Holden (carpenter), Kynzee Hoimer (carpenter), and Kat Hassard (plumber). “I am so grateful for those women,” she says. She’s also had many great male coworkers, and through all her years on the job, Christy says the biggest lesson has been the importance of communication. “Without proper communication, the whole project fails before it even starts," she says. But her proudest accomplishments? The apprentices she’s mentored along the way. “I want to see the next generation go further than me," she says. To all the young women out there thinking about the trades, Christy offers this advice: “You are stronger than you think. You have the ability to build the future. And if you ever need a mentor, there are lots of us out here, ready to teach you.” Interested in joining a trade but not sure where to start? We can help you on your journey. Visit clac.ca/swit.
