Become Dual Ticketed

CLAC journeypersons across Canada may benefit from additional guidance navigating dual-ticketing pathways—a way to gain two trades certifications in related trades. This can open the door to more job opportunities, career flexibility, and increased earning potential.

What is dual ticketing?

Dual ticketing allows journeypersons to pursue and earn certification in two related trades, either simultaneously or consecutively. Many trades share overlapping skills and competencies, allowing journeypersons to expand their skillset and stay on site longer.

Who is it for?

  • Journeypersons looking to broaden their qualifications and opportunities
  • Employers who want versatile, highly skilled workers
  • Technical training providers supporting multi-disciplinary career paths, including institutions like CLAC's CCDC College in Edmonton, which offers hands-on, industry-aligned programs designed to prepare students for success across diverse trades and sectors.

How it works

Alberta

  • Administered through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT)
  • Journeypersons may receive credit for previous technical training or work experience

British Columbia

  • Supports dual ticketing through SkilledTradesBC with flexible training options
  • Transfer agreements and prior learning assessments available

Manitoba

  • Administered through Apprenticeship Manitoba
  • Dual ticketing might be available through Apprenticeship Manitoba by becoming a trade qualifier

Ontario

  • Administered through Skilled Trades Ontario (STO)
  • Dual ticketing might be available through the Trade Equivalency Assessment (TEA) at STO

Saskatchewan

  • Encourages dual certification where trades align
  • Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) guides transitions

  • Broaden your employment prospects and increases employability
    • Qualify for a wider range of jobs across different sectors, industries, and provinces. Holding multiple tickets make you a more attractive hire to contractors and employers.
  • Increase your value on site
    • Step in where needed across trades, reducing downtime and making you a key asset on the crew.
  • Stay on site longer
    • Work through multiple phases of a project without needing to switch jobs or wait for your trade specific scope.
  • Higher earning potential
  • Career security
    • When one trade slows down, your second ticket keeps you working.
  • Prepare for leadership roles
    • Dual-ticketed workers are well positioned for supervisory or specialized roles.
