Friday, September 15, 2017 Town of Bienfait Public Works Employees Choose CLAC Local 306 Public works employees finally gain representation News Saskatoon—Public works employees for the Town of Bienfait have chosen Education, Service, and Health Care Union, CLAC Local 306, as their bargaining representatives. The employees reached out to Local 306 for help and guidance after being turned down by several other unions for assistance. This resulted in Local 306 applying for bargaining rights in April of this year. “Of the many unions we contacted, CLAC was the only one that was willing to go to bat for a small group of employees,” says Ed Johansen, one of the public works employees. After challenges from other unions and several board hearings, the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board certified Local 306 as the bargaining agent for these employees on September 12, 2017. “The employees have a good relationship with their employer, but wanted to have the security and guidance that a union can bring,” says Kent Kornelsen, CLAC representative. “They wanted a union that is able to build on the good relationship that already exists with the employer. Local 306 is excited to represent these members going forward and to raise awareness of our ability to help Saskatchewan workers who are either not represented or are under-represented.” Local 306’s newest members look forward to working with the union and employer to negotiate their first collective agreement.
