The Value of CLAC

What makes CLAC unique? Here’s a refresher

First and foremost, CLAC is a labour union. That means that we do all the normal work of a union, which includes bargaining, representation, and supporting members, but we do it from the values of respect, dignity, and fairness.

A labour union is the bargaining agent for employees. It negotiates terms and conditions of employment with the employer, which are described in the collective agreement. It also represents unionized employees on issues that relate to the collective agreement, as well as other workplace laws such as Manitoba’s Employment Standards Code and the Human Rights Code.

CLAC believes that membership in a union should be voluntary, which is why we meet workers in their workplaces and invite them to sign membership cards. We represent all employees, even those who choose not to become members.

CLAC is independent and Canadian. This means your dues stay in the country, and they aren’t used to support political parties. Instead, your dues directly fund the representation of you and more than 60,000 workers across Canada.

CLAC believes that workers can experience a healthy, fair workplace without having a negative relationship with their employer. When we negotiate, process grievances, or meet with management to discuss issues, we do so while preserving the dignity of everyone involved. We build a respectful and productive partnership between workers and employers.

Finally, CLAC is committed to upholding the value of the work you do and recognizing the worth of every individual worker.
