The Next Generation

By Kevin Kohut, BC Construction and Mining Coordinator

Despite being an up-and-coming, in-demand generation, and one that’s consistently reshaping how we think about work, millennials often have a hard time finding secure, gainful employment. According to Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate for Canadians between the ages of 15-24 is above 12 percent—much higher than the national average.

But in a busy construction industry, millennials are in high demand in BC. The construction industry’s workforce is aging faster than any other industry in the country, and construction companies nationwide are looking to fill multiple positions. Many industry leaders are hoping millennials are the solution.

Trends suggest that about 20 percent of all construction workers will retire over the next 10 years, and a total of 12 percent will be leaving the industry within the next five years. The need to attract millennials into the industry is felt nationwide and across multiple construction subsectors.

The construction sector offers appealing benefits for young people. The low cost of training in apprenticeship programs means that millennials going into construction will not have to accumulate significant student debt, as is often the case with university students. Also, there is significant upward mobility for those working in the industry, as apprentices progress to journeyperson status and become workplace leaders and mentors. Some may even choose to own their own business in the future.

Many construction jobs provide opportunities to travel and work outside of an office setting. There is also the sense of accomplishment that individuals feel once a project is completed, and the continuous pride of seeing their work on display for years to come.

Industry leaders are hoping that millennials recognize and respond to these opportunities. Lifelong, rewarding careers in the trades await the next generation.
