Ontario Construction Fall Local Board Updates

Local 6
The Local 6 annual general meeting (AGM) and golf tournament, held on June 10, was a great success. It was the most well-attended AGM yet! The weather was great, the company was fun, and the food was delicious. Board member Mark O’Grady’s three-year term had come to an end; however, there were no nominees to fill the position. The board therefore requested that Mark be allowed to serve another term. Mark graciously agreed to continue on as a board member. On behalf of the board, we would like to extend a hearty thank you to Mark. The board plans to meet again in September.

Local 52
The board met on May 11 in the new Mississauga Member Centre. It was a pleasure for us to meet in our own space after being welcomed in the Cambridge Member Centre for a few months while construction was finalized on this building. At the meeting, local staff provided updates on new organizing, ongoing negotiations, and ratified settlements for Rockwell Site Works, C.E.C. Mechanical, Rumble Electric, Topline Electric, Villano Construction, Dalron Construction, WB Melback, Kinley Construction, Kile Contracting, and Mirtren Contractors. The board was updated on cases that local staff are addressing through legal counsel at the Ontario Labour Relations Board. The board chose Brian Lefreniere to represent Local 52 at CLAC’s National Convention in October in Kitchener.

Local 53
The annual general meeting (AGM) was held on June 8 in London. Members heard business and financial reports for 2016. Local 53 continues to grow in new workplaces and membership—at a pace of 60 percent over a five-year period—with average monthly membership in 2016 at 1,083. A presentation and discussion was held about the Ontario legislation to overhaul labour law. Jeff Stacey of McLean-Taylor and Ted Quenneville of Pro Electric were reelected to serve on the board. Members were also given the opportunity to join the pledge for job site safety by signing the Jersey of Courage. The next scheduled board meeting is September 14.
