Tuesday, May 23, 2017 Natural Resources Events Newsletters Saulteau First Nation Graduation Ceremony The BC government, BC Hydro, CLAC, Peace River Hydro Partners (PRHP), Industry Training Authority (ITA), and industry partners gathered on the traditional territory of the Saulteau First Nations on December 2, 2016, to celebrate the achievements of 10 students who have completed Level 1 of the Construction Craft Worker (CCW) program. Graduates are now working for PRHP on the Site C Clean Energy Project. The students, members of the Saulteau First Nations, participated in this innovative training-to-employment program via CLAC’s virtual classroom training system (VCTS). The system allowed them to connect with top instructors in BC, enhancing their capacity for current and future employment, while remaining in their community. “CLAC is excited to remove barriers for learners,” says Larry Richardson, CLAC Training BC director. “Through programs such as this, students are able to cut the costs of travelling for training, and they benefit from the direct support of their community while upgrading their skills and knowledge. On behalf of CLAC, I’d like to wish the students all the success in their training and future employment.” As part of the ceremony, the graduates received their certificate of completion presented by Thompson Rivers University, as well as hard hats and safety vests from PRHP. The training-to-employment program was made possible by the financial commitment of the federal-provincial governments under the Canada-BC Job Fund Agreement and the positive working relationships between the Saulteau First Nations, CLAC, PRHP, ITA, Thompson Rivers University, and the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism, and Skills Training. Musqueam Career Fair The Vancouver weather report called for a snow storm, but the grim forecast did not deter community members from participating in the Musqueam Career Fair on December 8, 2016. CLAC regularly participates in the expertly planned event, connecting members new and old with employment opportunities with CLAC contractors. Premier’s BC Natural Resources Forum CLAC attended the forum for the fourth year. As the main event sponsor/exhibitor, we had the honour to introduce the honourable Perrin Beatty, former MP and current CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, in front of 400 guests. We were able to share CLAC’s story, the progressive labour model, and its vital role in shaping the natural resource sector of BC. We look forward to attending next year!
