Concerns about Violence
Due to a growing wave of residents with
dementia, Ontario nursing homes are
pleading for help from the province.
“We’re really concerned [about violence],”
says Candace Chartier, chief
executive of the Ontario Long Term
Care Association. The association is
lobbying the Ontario government for
$60 million over three years so expert
teams (called behavioural support
teams) can be placed in more homes.
The association also surveyed members
and found a staggering rise in dementia
and violence.
-
62 percent now have Alzheimer’s
disease or other dementias, an increase
of 6 percent since 2010.
- Nearly half (46 percent) exhibit aggressive
behaviour related to dementia
or a mental health condition,
while more than 1 in 5 (22.2 percent)
showed severe aggressive behaviour.
