Welder Apprenticeship Training – First Year

CLAC Career Development College is an accredited training institute for providing welder technical training for all levels —from pre-employment to journeyperson.

In the first period of training, students will complete the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) curriculum over an 8-week session.

Students are provided instruction and supporting information on safety, drawings and blueprints, understanding welding flaws, the tools of the trade, and trades mathematics.

Course Outline

Section 1 – Workplace safety and tools

Section 2 – Welding technology and properties of metals

Section 3 – Gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, metal cored arc welding, submerged arc welding

Section 4 – Trades math

Apprentice Eligibility

Minimum Requirements
  • English 10-2
  • Math 10-3 OR,
  • A pass mark in all 5 Canadian General Education Development (GED Tests), OR
  • AIT Trades Entrance Exam
Recommended Requirements
  • English 30-2
  • Math 30-3
  • Physics 20 or Chemistry 20 or Science 20
  • Related Career and Technology Studied (CTS Courses)

Prerequisites

  • 1560 hours of work experience recommended

Tuition

Period 1 - $1,396

  • Tuition - $1,096.00
  • Books and supplies fee - $300

Come Prepared: Personal Protective Equipment Requirements

Students must provide their own personal protective equipment (PPE). These requirements are in accordance with regulations under Alberta’s Occupational Health & Safety Act.
