Before joining Golderado, Bailey spent years working on the pipeline with Macros. She started with Golderado nearly three years ago as a heavy equipment operator, then gradually moved onto the underground crew and into her current role as a topman. As Bailey explains, a topman is essentially the connection between the crew in the ground and the operators above. She helps guide and spot, supports both pipelayers and operators, cuts and measures pipe, prepares and lowers materials into the trench, places and levels gravel, helps with concrete, and checks alignments, measurements, and grade using lasers and levels. In many ways, she is the communication link and extra set of eyes that helps keep the job running safely and smoothly. Bailey says one of the biggest things she has learned on the job is the importance of listening, communication, and being open to guidance from the people around you. Her advice to women considering a career in the trades: "be patient, stay vigilant, and be open to learning and feedback." She also believes women in construction should be supported by being given the chance to speak up, take part, and take up space in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.
