Apprenticeship Resource Guide
Ontario

Congratulations on Choosing Apprenticeship!

An apprenticeship is a great way to learn a skilled trade through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom study.

Some quick facts about apprenticeship in Ontario:

  • 80% of your apprenticeship is on-the-job training, 20% is completing your in-class training
  • Every trade has different competencies and skills – learn more by visiting Skilled Trades Ontario
  • Hours to complete your apprenticeship vary on the trade but are typically 7,500-9,000 hours (on-site and in-class)
  • An apprenticeship can take anywhere between 3 to 5 years depending on the trade and availability of training in schools
  • You are responsible for tracking your hours and completing your Training Standard (Logbook)
  • CLAC represents 200+ construction employers who hire and work in multiple trades. Get more information from our Central Jobs team about opportunities in the trades!

CLAC’s Central Apprenticeship Team is here to help you make informed career decisions, navigate the apprenticeship system in Ontario, and guide you along your educational pathway to becoming a successful, certified Journeyperson in your trade. We can also help cover the cost of trade school tuition fees through our tuition reimbursement program as well as through our apprenticeship awards.

This guide provides information on what to expect, who is involved in your journey, and some practical best practices to help you out.
