Tuesday, September 17, 2019 YYC Screening Officers Ratify Renewed Agreement Locals Local 56 Ratifications Calgary—Screening officers at Calgary International Airport (YYC) voted 71 percent in favour of a settlement for a renewed collective agreement following eight months of negotiations between their union, Logistics, Manufacturing, and Allied Trades Union, CLAC Local 56, and Garda Security Screening Inc. In December 2018, over 750 workers employed by Garda voted to leave the Teamsters and join CLAC. The previous collective agreement with the Teamsters expired in March 2018, and this is the first contract negotiated with CLAC. Highlights of the new contract, which expires March 31, 2022, include a 9.3 percent wage increase for senior employees over the term of the agreement, upfront signing bonuses of $2,000 for full-time employees and $1,000 for part-time employees, and increased employer pension and health benefits plan contributions. Other improvements include increased scheduling flexibility, better provisions for breaks during shifts, recognition for bilingual employees, increased opportunities for part-time employees, and employer reimbursement for employees who take French language courses. “There is a lot of value in this settlement for our members,” says Sean McBrien, a YYC screening officer who served on the union bargaining committee. “This new collective agreement will help to make our lives and workplace better.” “We are very pleased with the strong endorsement from members in favour of this new contract,” says Randy Klassen, regional director of CLAC’s Calgary Member Centre. “We appreciate the strong commitment from our membership, the bargaining committee, and Garda to come to a settlement at the bargaining table.” “Preboard screening is a relatively new sector for CLAC,” says Brendan Kooy, CLAC representative. “These workers perform an incredibly important service to help protect the public travelling through YYC, and it is great to see them properly recognized for the work that they do.” You might be interested in Standing Your Ground, and Staying Steady on the Job 4 Jun 2026 CLAC Partners with Alberta Government to Advance Skilled Trades Training and Accelerate Certification 4 Jun 2026 Strathcona Mechanical Workers Ratify New Agreement Providing Wage, Scheduling Improvements 3 Jun 2026 Ready to Deliver 3 Jun 2026
