“Yes, You’re Covered!”

What volunteer firefighters need to know about WSIB coverage

Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of many Ontario communities, bravely stepping into emergencies to protect others. But what happens if you get hurt in the line of duty?

The good news is, yes, you are covered through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

What is WSIB?

WSIB is Ontario’s workplace injury insurance system. If you’re injured or become ill due to your work, WSIB steps in with

  • medical coverage,
  • wage-loss benefits,
  • rehabilitation,
  • support for psychological injuries, and
  • help for families in severe cases.

Are volunteer firefighters automatically covered?

Yes. If your fire department is a Schedule 1 employer (most are), it’s their responsibility to register you and pay into WSIB. You should ask your fire chief or department leadership to confirm that you are registered.

What to do if you’re injured.

  1. Get medical help. Let the provider know you were volunteering.
  2. Report it. Your chief should file a Form 7. You should also file a Form 6.
  3. Track everything. A doctor will submit Form 8, but always keep your own records as well.

How are volunteer earnings calculated?

Since volunteers don’t earn full-time salaries, WSIB uses an imputed earnings model. Currently, the maximum annual earnings used for VFFs is $117,000, with 85 percent paid as wage-loss benefit. The minimum is set at 50 percent of the maximum. Check WSIB for annual updates.
