Blogs Meet Simone Plante, a Local 63 member working with Technical Workforce Inc. (TWI). Simone has been in construction for three and a half years, spending most of that time working with cranes. But a career in the skilled trades wasn't always part of her plan! How did you get started in the trades? I came into the trades on a whim by taking a carpentry course via Women Building Futures. I never thought as a kid I'd end up here but it's funny how life works. What's been one of your proudest moments? As stressful as it was, I was really proud and excited after having my first day operating a mobile crane on site. I was both excited and nervous but that just proved to myself how much I wanted to do it and how badly I wanted to be good at it. Why should more women consider a career in crane operation? Other than thinking being a crane operator is really cool, I think more women should consider it as a career path because of where it can take you. You'll get to see all kinds of crazy jobs and there's tons of variety in crane work. It’s intimidating at first for sure but being in the seat is the most fun thing ever. What advice would you give women considering the skilled trades? As scary as it is to join a male-majority trade, there is absolutely room and space for you in it. There will be highs and there will be lows but there's so many avenues you can explore at all times. You aren't bound to one trade forever, which makes it so there's practically endless opportunities. Thanks for sharing your story, Simone! Interested in joining the trades?
