Financial Support for Apprentices Available Through Team Canada Strong

The federal government has announced new financial supports to help apprentices complete their training and earn their Red Seal certification. Here’s what you need to know about the new Team Canada Strong initiative and how it could benefit you.

The government is investing $8 billion in the new program. The goal is to recruit, train, and hire between 80,000 and 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers over the next five years.

For apprentices already working in the trades, the good news is that the program includes new financial support to help cover training costs and reward those who complete their apprenticeship.

$5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus

  • One of the biggest benefits for apprentices is the new $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus.
  • Starting November 16, 2026, tradespeople who complete their apprenticeship and earn certification in an eligible Red Seal trade can apply for this bonus.
  • Even better, the bonus will also be available to those who earned their certification on or after April 1, 2025.
  • This means that if you recently completed your apprenticeship, you may still qualify for the $5,000 payment.
  • If you're getting close to finishing your apprenticeship, this bonus could provide some extra financial support as you take the next step in your career.

Get Ready to Apply!

Applications open November 16, 2026, but you can start preparing now. You'll need the following information:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Mailing address
  • Email address (optional but recommended)
  • Banking information for direct deposit
  • Red Seal trade name and certification date
  • Province or territory where you earned your certification
  • Apprentice identification number

Permanent residents with a SIN beginning with “9” and protected persons must also provide proof of their status in Canada. Additional documents may be required depending on where you earned your certification.

Important Application Deadlines

If you earned your certification between April 1, 2025, and November 15, 2026, you must apply by May 31, 2027.

If you earn your certification on or after November 16, 2026, you have 12 months from your certification date to apply.

Be sure to have your documents ready. Once you start your application, you'll have 28 days to submit everything required. You can learn more here.

$400 Per Week During In-Class Training

Taking time away from work to attend technical training can put pressure on your finances.

To help, the government is introducing a new Apprenticeship Training Grant that will provide $400 per week while apprentices attend mandatory in-class technical training.

The best part? This payment will be provided on top of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. The grant is expected to launch in spring 2027. More information will become available as the program gets closer to its launch date.

Team Canada Strong also plans to provide even more income supports for people between training and going back to work.

Making Apprenticeship Training Easier

Team Canada Strong isn't just about financial support. The government is also planning changes to make apprenticeship training and certification easier. These changes include:

  • Online Red Seal exams: Allowing apprentices to complete certification exams online.
  • Digital logbooks: Making it easier to track apprenticeship hours and progress.
  • A national apprenticeship number: Creating one registered apprenticeship number for use across Canada.
  • Build Canada Apprenticeship Service: Designed to make hiring and training apprentices easier and more financially beneficial for employers.
  • More training opportunities: Investing in more training centres to improve facilities, increase training spaces, and purchase modern equipment.

These improvements are intended to help apprentices move through their training and earn certification sooner.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you're currently working toward your Red Seal certification, Team Canada Strong could provide valuable support along the way.

Whether you're preparing for your next period of technical training or getting ready to write your certification exam, it's worth keeping an eye on these new programs.

Some benefits are not available yet, so be sure to check application dates and eligibility requirements as more details are released.
