Local 53 was certified as the union for the members employed by Wilhelm Concrete by the Ontario Labour Relations Board in July 2021. The new three-year contract provides members with an immediate seven percent wage increase. The total three-year value of all compensation ranges from 15 to 16 percent, depending on classification. Significant to the total package is a two percent increase in employer contributions to members’ pension plan. The contract also increases payments for daily allowance, mileage rate, travel, and the annual allowance for workwear, tools, or boots. A particular beneficial new clause is short term leave with full pay for the birth or adoption of a child. “This contract provides security and good pay for our members,” says Roger Grootenboer, representative. “Our members gave us clear expectations at the outset of contract renewal discussions. We were pleased that management and the union bargaining committee were able to arrive at a positive settlement for everyone. The strong vote of acceptance confirms for me that our members’ expectations were realized.” You might be interested in Why We Work Safely 5 Jun 2026 Standing Your Ground, and Staying Steady on the Job 4 Jun 2026 CLAC Partners with Alberta Government to Advance Skilled Trades Training and Accelerate Certification 4 Jun 2026 Strathcona Mechanical Workers Ratify New Agreement Providing Wage, Scheduling Improvements 3 Jun 2026
