What Do You Do?

By Heidi Martens, Representative

In the last few years, I started to pay attention to the questions we ask one another when we meet new people. Two questions I hear a lot are, “Where are you from?” and, “What do you do for a living?”

Asking these questions is probably a simple habit of small talk, and yet it’s a fascinating reminder that we spend a large part of our lives at work. What we do to earn an income is a very important part of our lives.

But it should be only one of the things that we do. What other aspects of your life need attention? Hobbies? Relationships? Physical, mental, and spiritual well-being? Study?

Sometimes, I use the excuse that because my work-life is so busy, these other pieces are pushed to the side. Ironically, I find that when I prioritize the other pieces of my life, I’m more balanced and energized in my work-life.

For members working at various Save-On-Foods stores during the busy holidays, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the demands of the job serving customers. You were probably exhausted when you finished your shift. Now is a good time to reconnect with the many other people and areas of your life you may have neglected during the holiday season.

For members working in our school system, a new year means new challenges helping students. But don’t get so caught up in your work that you forget to take care of yourself. Are there other aspects of your life that may be overdue for attention?

Finding balance in our work-life is a core part of what CLAC tries to do for members. Let us know how we can help you achieve it.
