But not reviewing your pay stub could mean that you are missing out on some of the benefits that have been negotiated by your union. But where do you start? Grab your copy of the collective agreement and your most recent pay stub, and check the following. 6 Things to Check on Your Pay Stub Wage rate – Ensure it is correct and that you are aware of when you will see your next increase. Hours – Did you get paid for the correct number of hours? Premiums – These are easy to miss. You might be entitled to shift or weekend premiums. Are there other premiums that you are missing? Vacation pay – Most of the time, vacation pay is shown on your pay stub. In the vacation pay section of your collective agreement, you will see what percent you should be receiving, and what that amount is calculated on. Pension – Check the math on the retirement savings deductions to ensure that the employer is also putting in its share correctly. Anything else – It’s a good idea to read the collective agreement thoroughly. When you do so, you may find other monetary items and benefits that you are entitled to. You can review your pay stub with your manager if you are unsure of how to read it. Also, review it with your steward or representative if you are unsure of any of the entitlements. Did You Know? Union dues are tax deductible and will be listed on the yearly T4 from your employer. CPP deductions from your pay will increase from 5.25 to 5.45 percent in January 2021.
