Voice Actors Unanimously Ratify Contract

Calgary—Local 301 members employed as voice actors by Chinook Animations unanimously ratified a new two-year collective agreement. The actors, who are among the best-paid in the industry, agreed to a wage freeze to ensure the company could remain competitive in the changing world of voice acting.

In recent years, various European companies have set up shop in Los Angeles, California, to take advantage of the increased demand for English dubbing on cartoons originating in Europe and Japan. This has increased competition for Chinook.

“With demand for voice acting increasing, we need to grow the talent pool up here in Canada,” says Mike Montague, CLAC representative. “During bargaining, we talked about increasing the training available for this group of members. We discussed setting up a committee made up of actors and representatives of the producer to look at specific opportunities for targeted training. This should ensure that our voice actors can be better prepared to capture this new work.”
