Vitrum Industries Employees Overwhelmingly Ratify New Five-Year Collective Agreement

LANGLEY, BC—Employees of Vitrum Industries Ltd., an architectural glass fabricator based in Langley, BC, voted 89 percent in favour of ratifying a five-year collective agreement providing them with solid wage gains and other improvements.

The approximately 250 employees are represented by Construction and Allied Workers Union, CLAC Local 68. The union has represented them for nearly 25 years. The BC Labour Relations Board certified Local 68 as the bargaining agent for the employees on March 24, 2000.

The new contract provides employees with a 15 percent wage increase over the term. It also provides an increase in employees’ annual footwear allowance, from $135 to $153, with the ability to roll it over for one year. In addition, the meal allowance was more than doubled, from $7 to $15. The agreement also provides improvements to employees’ benefits plan, including increases in the life insurance payout, long term disability coverage, and dental coverage.

“The past few months have been quite challenging due to economic struggles and shortage of work,” says Aleasha Wegner, CLAC representative. “Our members felt this impact especially before Christmas. The wage increases and benefits improvements the new contract brings help to ensure much-needed financial stability for members and their families during these uncertain economic times.”
