Monday, January 13, 2020 Violence at Work Guide Magazine Women in the education sector are now the most likely workers to experience a lost-time-injury (LTI) due to workplace violence. Only 15 years ago, men in healthcare had the highest LTI rate, but they have experienced a drop in claims—from almost 3 in every 1,000 full-time workers in 2004 to 1.75 in 2015. Women in healthcare also experienced a slight drop—from 1.3 in 2004 to 0.99 in 2015. Both men and women experienced increased violence in the education sector, with LTIs rising from 1.1 in 2004 to 2.47 in 2015 for women, and 0.25 to 0.47 for men. The average number of LTI claims across all industries due to violence rose from 0.4 per 1,000 in 2004 to 0.64 in 2015 for women. During the same time period, the rates for men remained fairly stable, hovering between 0.3 and 0.4. While men are less likely to experience an injury due to violence at work, they are more likely to end up in the emergency room, possibly because the aggression against them may be more violent and require immediate medical attention. The study, by the Institute for Work & Health, studied the LTI data from Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. The authors are calling for increased research and better data-keeping so that we can better understand how much violence is occurring, where, and then create a plan to address it.
