Friday, August 23, 2024 Upcoming Labour Legislation The Manitoba government is planning to make changes to the Labour Relations Act Newsletters Manitoba Local 306 Did you know that the set of laws directly related to unionized workplaces is called the Labour Relations Act? It is administered by the Manitoba Labour Board. The Manitoba government plans to pass changes to the act this fall in two significant ways: They plan to make it illegal for employers to hire replacement workers while workers are on strike. While CLAC only takes members on strike as a last resort, in 2023, educational assistant members employed by Hanover School Division in Steinbach went on strike for three weeks, during which HSD did hire replacement workers. Another change is that workers will be able to unionize their workplace automatically—without a vote being held by the labour board—when they can demonstrate that enough employees are in favour of unionizing. Currently, a vote is held no matter how many employees have shown support to unionize. Employees demonstrate their support for unionizing by signing a union member card. Do you have friends or family who want to explore joining a union? Send them our way and we will happily discuss how to bring the benefits of CLAC representation to their workplace.
