Navigating safety training requirements in the construction industry can be a complicated task, especially if you are new to working in the trades. There are several different versions of training courses, offered by a variety of training providers, and in some cases, the same course may have several different names. It can be challenging to find the training you need, on your schedule, with the best possible rates.

Safety training requirements will vary from jobsite to jobsite, but we have put together a list of the top 10 courses required in Alberta’s construction industry to help get you started! 

These are the top courses required to even set foot on most sites in Alberta. Whether you are looking for work in commercial, industrial, or maintenance sectors, you can’t go wrong with this training on your resume!

1)     Construction Safety Training System (CSTS-09)

This six-to-eight-hour online course has become a pre-entry requirement for many construction industry sites.

2)     Common Safety Orientation (CSO)

This two-to-three-hour online course is intended for all new workers in the oil and gas industry. With content that is driven and endorsed by industry, CSO training provides consistent safety and messaging that clearly explains safe work practices.

3)     WHMIS 2015 GHS

This two-hour online course aims to prevent workplace injuries, diseases, and deaths resulting from the storage and use of hazardous products.

4)     Standard First Aid CPR C-AED

This two-day, in-class course covers all skills in emergency first aid plus first aid for other injuries and illnesses including head and spinal injuries, and fractures of the upper and lower limbs. This course includes Level C CPR training and certification (adult, child, infant, and two-rescuer resuscitation) and AED training and certification.

When first getting started, ask yourself what type of work you will be performing. Will you be working at heights or working in confined spaces? Will you be expected to operate any type of equipment? We recommend looking at job postings for positions you are interested in to see what the basic requirements are for your position.

5)     OSSA Fall Protection

This one-day hands-on course is intended for anyone who will be working at heights. Topics include fall protection basics, anchor points, connectors, harnesses, specialty situations, and equipment care.

6)     OSSA Confined Space Entry & Monitor

This one-day course is designed for workers who may be expected to work in or around confined spaces. Topics include regulations and legislation relating to confined spaces, hazard assessments, use of supplied air and self-contained breathing apparatus, and hazardous atmospheres.

7)     OSSA Elevated Work Platform

This one-day hands-on course is intended for anyone who operates or works on a man-lift, aerial work platform (AWP) or elevated work platform (EWP). Topics include legislation, re-use inspections, PPE, working from heights, and safely operating the equipment in the field. Pre-requisite: OSSA Fall Protection.

8)     Ground Disturbance II

This in-class or online course is for anyone performing an independent ground disturbance, supervising those performing a ground disturbance, or issuing and receiving ground disturbance permits. This course covers regulations, underground facilities, inspections, and backfill.

9)     Pipeline Construction Safety Training (PCST)

This program has become a pre-entry requirement for many pipeline sites.

Are there any hazards that you should be aware of at a potential worksite? All workers on a live H2S site are expected to have this training. Do your research regarding site-specific safety training!

10) H2S Alive

H2S Alive provides learners with the knowledge to recognize and identify the properties of hydrogen sulphide, protect themselves from its effects, and perform basic rescue techniques including CPR. Included is the use of various detection and respiratory equipment.
