Take a Break; Work Better

How long should you work before taking a break? A recent study by the Draugiem Group determined that there is an optimal amount of time that people can perform at their peak: 52 minutes. After that, you begin to lose focus, and need a break. How long? Seventeen minutes.

Most people’s natural energy ebb and flow works in this roughly hour on, 15 minutes off schedule. Of course, most jobs don’t allow for this ideal work-to-break ratio.

To be effective, you really need to focus on the task at hand during your hour of work, and then totally disengage from it during your break. The study found that when workers did this, they were far more productive than those who continued to work even though they were tired and distracted and those who didn’t take a real break. Walking, reading, and chatting are some of the best ways to recharge.

If your job offers some flexibility in when you start and stop tasks, don’t work through fatigue. Doing so will leave you exhausted, frustrated, and distracted—and more prone to make mistakes. Take a break; work better.
