Strong Wage Gains for Woodland Employees with New Contract

Edmonton—Employees of Woodland Constructors Ltd. working at six sites across Alberta, ratified a 28-month collective agreement providing them with strong wage gains and other improvements.

The 125 employees are represented by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 63. Negotiations were held throughout January, and the agreement was ratified during the week of January 23 – 30, 2023. Over 100 employees voted, with 68 percent voting in favour of ratifying the settlement.

The new contract provides employees with a minimum seven percent wage increase retroactive to January 1, 2023. A further wage increase of four percent will take effect on September 3, 2023, for employees at most of the sites, with a wage review scheduled for the remaining site. The agreement also provides improved training contributions and language, which will greatly enhance employees’ access to the union’s training offerings. In addition, employer contributions to benefits premiums were increased, which will keep all employees covered under the benefits plan, and coverage for the purchase of prescription safety glasses was increased.

“This negotiation was a little more complicated due to several groups of employees from different sectors of work all negotiating together,” says Edwin Dening, CLAC representative. “But with the market conditions as they are in the construction industry in Alberta, we were able to bring wage increases to all the employees performing different kinds of work.”

Woodland, which is primarily an industrial construction company, is currently working on two civil projects, three industrial projects, and a wind farm renewable energy project.
