Stewards: The Heart of Our Union

What makes a union strong? It’s not just contracts and negotiations—it’s the people who stand up for their coworkers every day. They are called stewards

By Nnedi Agu, Representative

What Is a Steward?

Stewards are members of the bargaining unit who represent your interests and enforce the collective agreement. They are the front-line representatives of the union and the heart of the union.

And here’s something you might not realize: they’re volunteers. They step up, not because they have to, but because they care.

But what exactly does the steward do?

The Role of a Steward

Stewards wear many hats.

Advocate – Stewards represent members in discussions with management, ensuring that workplace rights and agreements are held.

Communicator – Stewards share important updates, listen to member feedback, discuss issues with CLAC representatives, and explain provisions of the collective agreement.

Witness – Stewards witness events that occur at your workplace. Almost all collective agreements require a representative from the union to be present whenever management issues a disciplinary letter to an employee.

Relationship builder – Every workplace is made up of a large number of people with different personalities and backgrounds. Stewards foster a positive atmosphere while ensuring fairness and justice for everyone.

Why Stewards Matter

Stewards are the voice of the members, ensuring that everyone is treated fairly, and that the collective agreement is respected. They play a critical role in fostering solidarity and empowering members to stand together.

Imagine walking into a tough meeting with your manager, not knowing what to expect. Then a familiar face sits beside you—your steward.

They’re there to make sure you’re treated fairly, that your rights are protected, and that you don’t have to go through it alone. And they do all this on a volunteer basis. Their time, energy, and commitment come from a place of dedication to their coworkers and the union as a whole.

How You Can Support Your Steward

Stay informed. Read updates, attend meetings, and participate in union activities.

Ask questions. if you’re unsure about something, your steward is there to help.

Get Involved. Share ideas or simply show appreciation for their work—it goes a long way.
