Sunday, December 5, 2021 Steward Profile: Meet Sean Allen Newsletters Manitoba Local 306 Where do you work and in what position? I currently work at Save-On-Foods store #4415 (St. James) in Winnipeg as a meat clerk. What made you interested in being a steward? I have always been interested in the relationship between workers and management and how to amicably resolve disputes. I was also a steward at previous employers that were unionized, as well as being involved with multiple health and safety committees, so it was a natural to want to contribute where I currently work. What do you like about being a steward? The most satisfying part of being a steward is being there to help out your coworkers no matter what the situation might be. What is frustrating? I really don’t have any frustrations. When I took on the role of steward, I knew I would hear from all kinds of people with all kinds of issues. By talking to the members, I am better able to understand where they are coming from and how they feel about any particular circumstance. You recently took part in CLAC’s Cooperate to Win program, which reviews the basics of interest-based labour relations, held with management. What was your takeaway from the day? It was nice being able to work with management in a cooperative setting, free from the distractions of the workplace. We were able to talk about some ideas we are looking to do at our workplace! What Is a Union Steward? • A steward is a workplace leader and member of the bargaining unit whose main task is to represent their colleagues. • A steward is CLAC’s voice in the workplace. • A steward supports their colleagues by participating in labour-management meetings, welcoming new employees, being a witness at disciplinary hearings (i.e., corrective action), and being a voice when issues arise. • A steward works with their union representatives and aims to understand the provisions of the collective agreement. Interested in becoming a steward? Check with your union representative to see if there are any vacancies! The steward position is a voluntary one.
