Stay Curious

Curiosity is a good thing. It keeps us interested in what’s going on around us and keeps us learning all the time

By Michael Schroeder Hubert, CLAC Training Manitoba Program Manager

Every once in a while, somebody is curious about what I am up to and asks about what I do as a trainer. Here are a couple of questions that I hear and some answers for those curious types out there.

What is the course that you teach most often?

The answer, Working at Heights. Close second would be Confined Space Entry. I’ve also been delivering a lot of Aerial Work Platform training lately too.

What is the course that you like presenting the most?

Confined Space Entry and a close second is telehandler. I’ve spent lots of time at the controls of a telehandler and was pretty good at operating. I’m out of practice now, but I enjoy instructing others on making sure that they can make their lifts safely.

I try to stay curious too. I recently enrolled in a Confined Space Entry course myself just to see how another instructor delivers the material. I learned some things that I can now use to make my presentation better.

If you’ve taken a course from me, you may remember that I give everyone a course evaluation and ask for feedback on how to make the courses better. I appreciate the comments and use the feedback to improve the course and my presentation style.

Recently, I was having a bit of an off day when I was presenting Aerial Work Platform. One of the participants noted on the evaluation that I could have improved my eye contact during the session.

Wow! When I read that it was like looking in the mirror. I totally got it. I appreciated the feedback and am trying to do better!

Curiosity keeps us learning and getting better all the time. It can also help us find safer ways of doing our jobs. And that is a huge win for everyone. Stay curious, my friends!
