Standing Strong

From securing new certifications and bargaining agreements to navigating political and industry developments, it has been a busy few months for CLAC in BC.

By Nathan Mathews, BC Director

As we move into the final quarter of 2025, CLAC’s work on behalf of members working across British Columbia remains strong, with gains in construction, manufacturing, service, and transportation.

Construction
Recently, nine collective agreements have been ratified by Local 68 members, representing hundreds of members working across the province. These agreements are a testament to the strength of the union’s bargaining teams and the trust placed in us by members.

CLAC membership numbers continue to grow. Work in Elk Valley has grown significantly now with over 800 members working in the region.

Work for members also continues to ramp up across several major sites, including Woodfibre LNG, the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant (with both CLAC-signatory contractors PCL Energy Inc. and PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc.), and ongoing projects at the Brucejack and Ascot mines.

We also recently secured the successful certification of TYBO Contracting Ltd., a civil contracting company based in Langley operating throughout the province. TYBO works with some of the largest private development firms, as well as various civic and provincial government agencies. Collective bargaining for a first agreement for these new Local 68 members is now well underway. Welcome!

In the Yukon, CLAC-signatory contractors are winning significant work. Our position in construction markets appears stronger than ever, meaning more jobs for members.

Looking ahead, early discussions around Cedar LNG and LNG Canada Phase Two are gaining momentum. At the same time, several major projects awaiting final investment and environmental approvals appear poised to be awarded to CLAC-signatory contractors, potentially securing great job opportunities for members well into 2026.

Healthcare, Manufacturing, and Service
CLAC continues to develop its presence in hospitality and education. Our longstanding work with Canucks Sports & Entertainment (CSE) remains a focus with a membership of over 1,900 Local 501 members.

This summer saw three new hotel certifications, with organizing efforts ongoing at additional sites.

Political Challenges and Union Advocacy
In May, a team of CLAC staff visited the BC Legislature (pictured above), engaging productively with MLAs and their staff. A highlight was the opportunity for CLAC to present to the entire Conservative caucus.

We continue to engage and challenge the provincial government where needed, ensuring that you and your fellow members’ voices are heard.

As we head into fall, CLAC in BC is well-positioned to make the most of emerging opportunities and to stand strong for you and your fellow members in the face of challenges.
