St. Peter’s Employees Displace CUPE with CLAC in Landslide Victory

Hamilton, ON—Employees working at St. Peter’s Residence at Chedoke have voted overwhelmingly in favour of switching unions from CUPE Local 7780 to Niagara Health Care and Service Workers Union, CLAC Local 302, in a stunning victory, with employees voting 106 to 58 in favour of CLAC.

The workers at this long term care home have been frustrated with CUPE’s lack of service for years, citing unreturned phone calls and lack of support for grievance issues as key reasons for contacting CLAC.

“When CUPE called me to ask whether there was something they had failed to do, I said, ‘representation!’ ” says Susan, a St. Peter’s employee. “We needed our seniority respected, and it was not. Our job-posting procedure was not followed, and nothing was done about it.”

These employees chose CLAC based on its reputation for superior representation and bargaining outcomes, backing up its members at grievance meetings and providing union stewards with support and training. CLAC also brings the knowledge and advocacy necessary to support healthcare workers, delivering innovative advocacy at Queen’s Park for improved working conditions.

“Our innovation is based on listening carefully to our members and their concerns,” says Michael Reid, CLAC Ontario healthcare coordinator. “We will continue to work hard to make every day a better day for our members.”
