Solid Gains for King Nursing Home Employees with New Contract

Bolton, ON—Over 120 Local 304 members employed by King Nursing Home Ltd. in Bolton ratified a new three-year collective agreement providing them with solid wage gains and a number of other improvements to their contract.

The members voted 90 percent in favour of the new agreement. CLAC has represented the RNs, RPNs, cooks, personal support workers, recreational therapists, healthcare aides, janitors, and dietary and laundry staff at the home since 1987.

Employees will receive wage increases ranging between 4.2 and 4.8 percent, depending on their classification. In addition to the general wage increases, some classifications will also receive a 30 cents per hour special adjustment.

Other gains for all employees include increases to vision care coverage, weekend and in-lieu-of-benefits premiums, bereavement leave, and statutory holidays. Improvements were also made to job-posting language to allow staff greater opportunity to get used to their new positions by tagging along on shifts with other staff doing the job.

“Given the financial and staffing pressures faced by everyone in the long term care sector in this province, this was a very positive round of bargaining,” says Michael Glockner, CLAC representative. “It’s reflective of the mature relationship between the union and the employer that has developed over the 31 years we have represented employees at the home. The gains made with this contract recognize the incredible work done by front-line staff in providing care to the elderly residents at the home.”

King Nursing Home is an 86-bed long term care home providing 24-hour nursing and personal care including specialized care for cognitively impaired residents.
