Sick Days Fast Facts

Paid sick days are a form of insurance — The employer is self-insuring for when their employees are sick. Some people see sick days as paid days they are owed, so they want to take them even if they’re not sick. But nobody would say it’s a good idea to crash your car just because you’ve got insurance and haven’t used it in a while!

Lying about sick time can get you fired — It’s important to realize that being paid for being sick when you’re not sick is a form of time theft. Any theft destroys trust and can quickly lead to termination of employment.

Sick notes — Most employers ask for sick notes after a certain number of days absent. But in the right circumstances, employers can also ask for a sick note after one day. Check your collective agreement and your employer’s policy manual to see what it says about sick days. You should be able to figure out when you have to provide a note, and who has to pay for which sick notes.

Absenteeism monitoring — When an employee is absent often, or in a particular pattern, it’s common for an employer to sit down with the employee to discuss it. Even when absences are approved, frequent absences can become a significant issue. It’s important for employees to tell their manager why they are missing work, and it’s important for employers to try to help the employees with attendance problems.
