Case in point: a 2021 worldwide survey of more than 30,000 people found that 4 in 10 workers were considering leaving their jobs or changing their careers. This mass exodus is sometimes referred to as the Great Resignation. The reasons for leaving a company, role, location, or sector are wide ranging, from wanting a better work-life balance to the reexamination of one’s priorities. The YOLO (you only live once) mentality may also play a role in pushing workers to investigate other career options. But a big off-the-cuff career move, especially as we move out of the pandemic, may be hasty. Mental health concerns are on the rise, for instance, which can have an impact on decision-making abilities. Instead of leaping into the unknown, when you begin to feel the itch for change, take a moment to apply the following approaches to your decision-making process. 5 things to consider before jumping ship Mull it over before asking for help. Sure, it’s great to get the opinions of others, but their biases may influence you if you haven’t first thought through the situation. When you do speak with someone, ask that they play devil’s advocate. This may help you look at your role or company in a different way. Talk to your current employer. If you are unhappy with your current situation and have ideas as to how it can improve, bring them to management. They may have feedback or suggestions. Estimating potential gains may set you back. Think you can make more at a different company? Overconfidence can make you inaccurate in predicting potential outcomes. Make sure you do your research. Accept that sometimes it may be harder to start over. Going to a new company often means learning everything again from the ground up—and proving yourself to a new group of coworkers and boss all over again.
