Security Guards at Calgary Airport Secure Gains with First Contract

Calgary—Employees of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires (southern Alberta) working as security guards at the Calgary International Airport voted overwhelmingly in favour of ratifying their first collective agreement providing them with wage gains and many other improvements.

The approximately 150  employees chose to join Logistics, Manufacturing, and Allied Trades Union, CLAC Local 56, in April 2024. Negotiations for their first collective agreement had been ongoing for the past year.

The contract provides senior employees with an immediate 4.5 percent wage increase, with a total of up to 9 percent over the 30-month term of the agreement. A new five-year wage grid system was implemented to ensure fair progression for all guards.

Other improvements include the implementation of regular joint labour-management meetings, improved hours of work that better match the industry, a 12-month sunset clause for all previous discipline, a $100 shoe allowance, a job-posting procedure that follows seniority, clearly labelled shift schedules, fairer rotation of assignments, annual sick day payout for those with good attendance, paid training time and a premium for those training new employees, the availability of permanent day or night shifts, and longer job-protected personal leaves of absence.

“This first contract for our new members employed by Commissionaires took almost a year to achieve, but we’re very pleased with the results,” says Ben Timmermans, CLAC representative. “We’re also pleased that the agreement was overwhelmingly supported by the membership, with 96 percent voting in favour of ratification. This agreement is a great start for these employees, and we look forward to continuing to represent them and work with their employer in the coming years.”
