CLAC Partners with Alberta Government to Advance Skilled Trades Training and Accelerate Certification

Calgary, AB—CLAC welcomes the Alberta government’s $4‑million investment to expand training opportunities for skilled trades workers, helping more Albertans gain certification faster while staying on the job.

In partnership with CLAC and Canadian training provider Built To Learn, the two‑year pilot program will introduce an advanced adaptive learning platform designed to support workers preparing for certification and Red Seal exams. The platform tailors training to each learner by assessing existing knowledge and focusing on required competencies, allowing participants to progress efficiently without duplicating learning.

“This initiative is about breaking down barriers that prevent skilled workers from reaching certification,” said Dennis Perrin, CLAC Provincial Director for Alberta and Saskatchewan. “Our members are ready to be part of the solution to Canada’s skilled trades shortage. By combining the strengths of government, industry and labour, this program will deliver real, measurable impact in the near term.”

The pilot is expected to initially support 200 workers in high-demand trades, including welding, steamfitter‑pipefitting, instrumentation, and ironworking. Upon measured success, that will expand to include additional trades and many more workers. By enabling workers to continue earning income while upgrading their skills, the program removes a key obstacle to certification and helps ensure training aligns with industry needs.

CLAC represents approximately 24,000 workers across Alberta, primarily in heavy industrial construction and maintenance. Through this initiative, CLAC will help deliver flexible, accessible training that strengthens the province’s workforce and supports major industrial projects.

“Alberta’s economy depends on a strong, skilled workforce,” Perrin said. “This investment helps experienced workers earn their credentials sooner, strengthens job sites, and contributes to the long‑term sustainability of our industry.”

The program runs from March 27, 2026, to March 27, 2028, and operates within existing Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Trades Qualifier Program standards.
