Rescuing Finley

On November 29, 2017, a machine shop in Quinte West caught fire. Volunteer firefighters from Quinte West Fire/Rescue Station 4 and Station 7 responded, with the support of a tanker from Belleville. As the volunteers entered the building, they found Finley, a seven-year-old spaniel, lying unconscious on the floor.

On initial examination, the dog had no vital signs. The volunteers administered oxygen from their emergency K-9 pack and slowly Finley regained consciousness.

“To my amazement, the dog recovered and was walking around with its owner about a half hour later,” says Chief Brian Whelan.

“If anything good can come out of a fire, this is it,” says Mike Knowles, president of Local 920, who was at the scene that night. “It’s not every day you can save an animal.”
No one was injured in the fire, which caused over $500,000 in damage.
