Ratifications

Cedarcroft Retirement Community

Local 304 members employed by Cedarcroft in Oshawa voted overwhelmingly in favour of their first collective agreement with CLAC. The local assumed representation responsibilities after a successful displacement application from Unifor on July 8, 2021. The new 4-year contract provides all classifications with an 11% increase over the term. In addition, CLAC was able to negotiate new weekend- and night-shift premiums, an increase in matching RRSP contributions, a new in-lieu of benefits for part-time employees, and a significant increase to vision care coverage.

“The members working at Cedarcroft could not be more pleased,” says Rocio Rembala, a member of the union bargaining committee. “In under seven months, CLAC accomplished more for the employees than Unifor did in the previous nine years.”

Cedarvale Lodge Retirement and Care Community

Local 304 members employed by this home in Keswick ratified a 3-year agreement providing them with annual 1.5% wage increases over the term. In addition, special wage adjustments were made for personal support workers and dietary and laundry aides. All employees will also benefit from improved vision care and paramedical coverage, a 45¢/hr. weekend premium, the introduction of a new 20¢/hr. night-shift premium, and reimbursement for nonoccupational functional abilities forms.

Chartwell London LTC

Local 303 registered nurses employed by this home in London unanimously ratified a 3-year agreement providing them with 1.75% annual wage increases over the term. In addition, night, evening, and weekend premiums will increase each year of the agreement. Other improvements negotiated include an increase to the responsibility allowance and an increase to vision care coverage. The agreement also includes coverage for mental health services by a psychologist, registered psychotherapist, or social worker to a maximum of $800 per year.

Lakeview Retirement Centre Inc.

Local 302 members employed by Lakeview in Hamilton voted in favour of a 3-year agreement providing them with a 2%/year wage increase over the term. In addition, RPNs and PSWs will receive a 5¢/hr. top up each year and dietary aides will receive top ups of 20¢, 10¢, and 10¢/hr. The agreement includes improvements to vision and dental benefits, increases to voluntary pension contributions, and increased sick days to 20 for full-time employees. In addition, the agreement includes improved guidelines and entitlements for absences due to COVID-19.

Marriott Courtyard Mississauga – Airport Corporate Centre West

Local 304 members employed at this hotel unanimously ratified a 6-year agreement providing them with significant wage increases. The agreement includes the adoption of a new wage grid, which resulted in some members receiving increases as high as 22.5% in the first year of the agreement. Across all classifications, the average increase for the first year was 12.5% followed by annual increases totalling an additional 10.5% over the remaining term.

ParaMed Home Health Care

Local 304 office and clerical employees of ParaMed, based in Oshawa, voted 95 percent in favour of ratifying their first agreement providing them with significant wage increases and the establishment of a wage grid. Other gains included improvements to benefits, sick time, and bereavement leave. The agreement also includes provisions for job postings, seniority, and scheduling language and ensures that no superior monetary provisions would be rolled back.

United Mennonite Home for the Aged

Local 302 members employed by this home in Vineland finally have a new agreement following a recent arbitration award. The previous contract had expired July 31, 2020, and when a settlement could not be reached, it went to arbitration. Due to the Ontario government’s Bill 124, Protecting a Sustainable Public Sector for Future Generations Act, 2019, wage increases awarded by the arbitrator were limited to 1% annually over the 3-year term. Annual increases were also made to weekend premiums and part-time in-lieu amounts.

“We’re very frustrated and disappointed with this award due to the limitations imposed by Bill 124,” says Isobel Farrell, regional director of the union’s Grimsby Member Centre. “The one percent wage increases effectively reduce members’ standard of living due to the high rate of inflation. The government needs to take action immediately to fix our broken healthcare system, starting by improving wages for all healthcare workers.”

Village on the Thames

Local 303 service members employed by this home in Chatham unanimously voted in favour of a 3-year agreement providing them with a 2%/yr. wage increase. In addition, increases were made to employer retirement matching and shift premiums. Improvements to shift exchange language were also included.
