Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) Local 303 members employed by CKHA ratified a new 3-year agreement providing improvements to wages, weekend premiums, and health benefits. “Like other hospital workers, these members are captured under Bill 124, the Protecting a Sustainable Public Sector for Future Generations Act,” says Trish Douma, CLAC regional director. “It is unfortunate that this bill has not been repealed, particularly during the pandemic. “However, we were able to secure nonmonetary changes to the collective agreement that improved seniority provisions and working flexibility for members. The union’s bargaining committee did an excellent job bringing forward their fellow members’ priorities in negotiations and reaching a fair settlement with their employer.” Hardy Terrace (service unit) Local 305 members employed by this retirement home in Brantford ratified a 1-year agreement providing them with a 1.4% wage increase, vision benefit increase to $300/2 yrs., and top vacation qualification decreased to 28 years (7 wks. @ 14%). Local 304 members employed by this Whitby-based homecare provider have a new 3-year agreement following arbitration. The contract includes a 1% wage increase in year 3, effectively breaking the industry-wide pattern of lump-sum settlements in the homecare sector. Additional improvements include annual retention bonuses and lump-sum payments. Despite the modest monetary improvements, the agreement maintains these members’ industry-leading wages, benefits, pension entitlement, paid vacation, shift-cancellation payments, and mileage reimbursements to personal support workers providing homecare in the Durham Region. “Homecare funding through the Ontario government has been frozen since 2015, which makes bargaining a renewed agreement extraordinarily difficult,” says Kevin Gates, CLAC representative. “Despite the obvious funding challenges, our members were not willing to accept another agreement with 0% wage increases and were prepared to move toward strike action to enforce our contract demands.” Prior to seeking a strike mandate, the union bargaining committee offered PAC the opportunity to resolve the contract dispute through voluntary binding arbitration in an effort to avoid a withdrawal of services. The parties agreed to refer the matter to arbitration and the hearing was held on November 26, 2019 Revera Inc.
