The 150 employees are represented by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 6. The union was certified by the Ontario Labour Relations Board to represent the company’s employees over 50 years ago in 1972. The new contract provides employees with a total package increase of between 17 to 19 percent, depending on classification, over the term. Along with annual wage increases, the agreement provides improvements to employees’ health benefits coverage and increases to the tool allowance and hourly rate premiums. “This settlement provides our members with much-needed increases to help with the higher cost of living,” says Darren Schutten, regional director of the union’s Grimsby Member Centre. “It will also help the company attract and retain skilled workers in a competitive labour environment.” Rankin Construction is a general contractor performing heavy civil projects that include roads, bridges, sewer and watermain, marine, and renewable energy projects in the Niagara region.
