Thursday, February 26, 2026 Protect Your Pay! Experience the power of reading your pay stub and understanding every dollar you earn Ontario Healthcare By Shawn Branton, Representative, Grimsby Member Centre Your pay stub might not be the most exciting thing you read, but it’s one of the most important. Every dollar you earn matters, and CLAC wants to make sure you receive every bit of it. In healthcare, we often see pay errors, like a missed shift premium, vacation pay calculated incorrectly, or overtime that didn’t make it through payroll. These mistakes happen—sometimes more often than people realize. The problem? Most people only look at their total pay and don’t check each line. When mistakes go unnoticed for months, they become much harder to fix later. Some employers will only correct older errors going back a limited amount of time. That’s why catching mistakes early is key. So, what can you do? Take a minute after each payday to read your pay stub. Make sure your hours, premiums, and overtime match what you worked. If something looks off, talk to your CLAC steward or representative right away. We’re here to help you fix it. 5 Things to Check on Your Pay Stub Hours Worked – Do your total hours match your schedule or time card? Overtime – Was overtime calculated at the right rate (time and a half or double time)? Premiums – Did you receive pay for shift, weekend, or in-lieu premiums you earned? Vacation or Statutory Holiday Pay – Were these amounts paid correctly when you took time off or worked a holiday? Deductions – Are benefit or pension deductions accurate? If they suddenly change, ask why. CLAC’s goal is simple: to protect your pay and your peace of mind. You work hard and your pay should reflect that. Checking your pay stub isn’t just about numbers. It’s about respecting your own work. When you review your pay, you’re taking an active role in ensuring your time, care, and skill are properly recognized. CLAC is here to support you, watching out for you, standing with you, and helping make sure every hour of your effort shows up where it belongs: on your pay stub and in your pocket.
