Friday, November 6, 2020 Project and Work Update Major project awards for CLAC-signatory contractors and job opportunities for Local 63 members across Alberta in 2021 Newsletters Alberta Local 63 Sectors Construction The past year has been an interesting and challenging time. While we have seen slowdowns and workforce reductions on industrial construction and maintenance projects due to COVID-19 and low resource prices, work on commercial, institutional, civil, and renewable energy projects has remained fairly constant, particularly in major centres such as Calgary and Edmonton. The new year figures to be a promising one for Local 63 members and CLAC-signatory contractors. Many oil and gas companies with assets in western Canada have announced increased capital spending for 2021, after dramatically cutting costs and spending to the bare minimum in 2020. Below is a list of ongoing and upcoming major projects that will employ Local 63 members: • A number of CLAC-signatory contractors (Borea Construction, PCL Energy) have wind farm and solar farm projects on the books for 2021 in southern Alberta. • Various CLAC-signatory contractors will continue to build sections of the Trans Mountain pipeline throughout Alberta and BC in 2021. • This year will be a busy one for shutdown and turnaround maintenance in Alberta for CLAC-signatory companies. • Technical Workforce Inc. will be constructing the third and final segment of the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR) starting in 2021. • AECOM has been awarded the contract for maintenance work at the Shell Scotford plant outside of Edmonton, creating opportunities across a number of trades for Local 63 members. Other CLAC-signatory companies will continue to perform maintenance work on this site as well. • PCL Energy has been awarded the Cascade Power Project, a 900 megawatt combined cycle power generation facility being constructed near Edson, Alberta. The project will have the capacity to supply over eight percent of the province’s average electricity demand. The facility will utilize modern, highly efficient industrial turbines, fueled by natural gas, and will commence operations in 2023.
