Saturday, July 30, 2022 Potential Volunteers in Sudbury Challenge Firefighter Testing Components Newsletters Ontario Emergency Services More than 30 candidates for the City of Greater Sudbury Volunteer Firefighters came to the firefighter training facility in Azilda, Ontario, this past May to challenge the various physical testing components. The 2022 recruitment effort focused on outlying areas in the region, which are often more challenging from a recruitment standpoint. The testing took place throughout the morning and afternoon, and the testing elements included a dummy drag, hose drag, ladder climb, hose carry, and confined space test. Each element is a prerequisite for all who wish to be volunteer firefighters in the region. The testing is facilitated by a partnership of the fire services management team along with current volunteer firefighters from across the City of Greater Sudbury. Not only does the testing help to determine if a candidate is a good fit for the fire service, but it also allows them to interact with current volunteer firefighters and begin establishing the team cohesion and commitment to each other that is the foundation of every volunteer fire station.
