Pay Attention to Your Paycheque

Are you more likely to check the forecast than your paycheque for errors? You aren’t alone.

A recent survey of Canadian workers found that a significant number don’t understand, or pay attention to, the line items on their pay statements.

•    57% don’t pay much attention to the income and deduction amounts.
•    47% pay more attention to social media than to their statement details.
•    46% pay more attention to the weather forecast than to their statement details.
•    38% don’t believe they would spot an issue or error on their statement.
•    35% don’t fully understand the details on their statement but assume they are correct.
•    23% would feel uncomfortable asking their employer to explain the details on their statement.

Even though many Canadians don’t understand or pay attention to their pay statements, the majority (58 percent) are satisfied with how and when they receive their paycheques.

We recommend that you always check your paycheque for discrepancies. If you don’t understand something, it’s important to ask—even if you feel uncomfortable.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of pay systems gone wrong. Hundreds of CLAC healthcare members in Ontario have been battling with a broken pay system at Revera for over two years. CLAC continues to fight for these members via protests and grievances.

If you think an error has occurred, it’s best to get it sorted out right away, rather than waiting and allowing the problem to potentially recur.
