Tuesday, August 20, 2024 Ode to Summer Sometimes, the end of one season and the start of another can bring mixed emotions Blogs Newsletters National By Amberly Winger, Marketing Manager I feel this every single year. That same bittersweet sadness knowing that summer will soon be over, and the cooler days of fall are inching upon us. While I love fall for its beautiful colours, pumpkins, Halloween, and overall cozy feeling, I’ll miss the hope that summer brings. Summertime seems to be the very essence of hope and promise. Everything feels possible. Every morning, waking with the sun shining, you feel a general sense of excitement and solace, like everything is going to be okay. Seeing neighbours walking their dogs before the workday kicks off, hearing the birds chirping, having a coffee on your back patio, all while instinctively knowing in your heart, it’s going to be a great day. It’s the best feeling, hands down. And for some reason, it’s easier to deal with difficult times or work challenges when it’s so beautiful and warm outside. A few minutes of sunshine on your lunchbreak and you’re ready to tackle any problems that await you. Now that I have kids, I feel this heavy nostalgic, back-to-school feeling even more. This is the last summer my kids will be this age (four and seven). I’m going to miss the planning, vacations, parks, splash pads, swimming, cottages, and most of all, family time. Maybe I’m over-romanticizing summer, but it’s easy to do since we get it for such a short period of time. To be clear, I know that the fall and winter seasons come with their own beautiful adventures (hello, Halloween and Christmas!) But there’s something so hopeful and energizing about more hours of sunshine during the day. But for now, I must sit with this uncomfortable feeling that arises every year around this time. So, I’m going to allow myself to feel a little bit blue. I know that “this too shall pass.” Does anyone else experience this ahead of each new school year?
