Wednesday, April 1, 2026 More than Just a Text A quick message might open the door, but a conversation builds the bridge Blogs National By Kristy-Lee Shepherd, CLAC Jobs, Jobs Coordinator – West You know that spark of excitement when you check your mail during your birthday month and spot a colourful envelope with your name handwritten on it from your favourite aunt? Before you even open it, you already feel it. No cash or gift card required. Just knowing someone thought of you, took the time to pick out a card, and actually mailed it—that’s the kind of thing that sticks with you and says more than HBD. It says: I paused my day, I thought of you, and I did something about it. Cards in the mail are the slowest method of all, and somehow the most powerful. You hold it, reread it, put it on the mantel, maybe even keep it tucked away in a drawer for years. It’s connection you can physically hold onto. Compare that to the many ways we connect today: Commenting on someone’s Instagram story is like a head-nod from across the room. It’s light, easy, and instant. You might get a laughing emoji or a quick reply, and it feels good. But it’s a snapshot, not the whole picture. Texting is more intentional. You’re choosing your words by adding extra details. But texting can leave a lot unsaid and tone can get lost. “I’m good” can mean anything from “life is great” to “please ask more questions.” Calling? Now we’re getting somewhere. You can pick up on the tone and little shifts in someone’s voice. You can tell if “I’m good” actually means “I’ve had a rough week.” A phone call opens the door to understanding, not just exchanging information. FaceTiming takes it one step further. Now you’ve got facial expressions and real-time reactions. It’s almost like being in the same room. You catch the smiles or excitement they couldn’t hide. If Auntie comes to visit, face-to-face will always win gold (sorry Hallmark!) Each style of communication matters as they all spark moments of connection. Although CLAC staff may not be FaceTiming members, we believe the stronger the efforts we make, the clearer the understanding, the greater the trust, and the more confident our members feel in their opportunities. A quick message might open the door, but a conversation builds the bridge. For instance, the Jobs Team or a recruiter can send a text with job details or email a full summary of the job’s details. But when they pick up the phone to talk to you, everything changes: they can explain the site, the crew, and the expectations. Suddenly, members aren’t just reading about a job, they’re picturing themselves in it, asking better questions, and making informed decisions for themselves and their families. If you’re a member looking for work and preparing for call backs, it helps to have a few practical tips in your back pocket. Take a look at our Phone Interview Tips Sheet for simple ways to feel more confident and make a strong impression. At CLAC, we want every member to feel like more than just a name on a list. Through thoughtful communication and real conversations, our goal is for you to feel seen, supported, and confident in your next step. Like that birthday card in the mail, it’s about knowing someone took the time, thought of you, and is genuinely in your corner because: We know you. We care about you. We’re here for you.
