McLean Taylor Employees Secure Strong Wage, Retirement Gains with New Contract

St. Mary’s, ON—Employees of McLean Taylor Construction Limited, based in St. Mary’s, Ontario, voted 81 percent in favour of ratifying a three-year collective agreement providing them with significant wage gains and pension plan contribution increases.

The employees are represented by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 53. The union has represented them since 2009.

The new contract provides wage increases of 16 to 21 percent over the term along with an 18 percent increase to employer contributions to employees’ pension plan, plus significant increases to matching contributions. In addition, premiums, allowances, and travel pay also were increased, including an increase to the boot, tool, and wellness allowance to $650 over three years, while the threshold for weekly overtime pay was reduced to 45 hours from 47.

“The union bargaining committee worked hard to negotiate a good settlement,” says James Koopman, CLAC representative. “They did a fantastic job of representing the members’ interests to management, and we are happy that we could produce a settlement that a strong majority of the membership could get behind.”

McLean Taylor builds bridges, dams, and water treatment facilities. The company has been most recently active working on projects in Tillsonburg, London, Caledonia, and Sarnia. It employs approximately 100 Local 53 members working as labourers, form setters, carpenters, truck drivers, machine operators, and crane operators.
