Monday, February 24, 2025 Lessons from the Strike In November 2023, nearly 300 educational assistants (EAs) employed by Hanover School Division went on strike for three weeks. The strike resulted in much better wage increases, however, we did not achieve all of our goals Locals Local 306 Newsletters Manitoba Local 306 4 Observations, a Year+ Later There is legislation in place today making it illegal for employers to use replacement workers. Our strike would have been different if that law had been in place at the time of the strike. You can fight fair and you can hold your head up high without dragging others through the mud. Our EAs have nothing to be embarrassed about—they acted with dignity and professionalism. It takes a big team to do big things. We now have much higher engagement with member leaders (stewards, health and safety reps, etc.), and our relationship with management has improved to where it’s better than before the strike.
