We are all adapting to circumstances that would have been inconceivable a year ago. And we have indeed laboured—all of us—to adjust in this time of enormous upheaval

The pandemic and ensuing shutdowns have had a profound impact on much of CLAC’s membership. Workers across several sectors saw their livelihoods immediately suspended.

Many of you are still waiting to go back to work. At the same time, members working on the front-lines of healthcare and retail persevered under dangerous and impossible conditions.

But the chaos of the pandemic also brings hidden benefits. We have all been given the gift of time—time to bond with family, time to enjoy being outdoors, and time to assess our lives and consider what truly matters most.

When the tumult ends, we may decide to embrace this slower, simpler, more mindful pace of life.

Your union, as always, is here for you. During this crisis, CLAC continues to extend our employee and family assistance program to all members and provide a subsidy to help cover health and welfare benefits for members who qualify.

CLAC has also put significant resources into giving you as much information as possible on COVID-related guidelines and supports across Canada. As the situation evolves, we continue to update this information and make it available to you on our website.

The pandemic has seen CLAC redouble our years-long efforts to improve conditions for our dedicated members working in care facilities across Canada. The first battle was to ensure proper PPE for workers as COVID cases and deaths ravaged long term care homes. The longer fight—for better pay, more staff, and less pointless paperwork—continues.

We bring that same commitment to all of our 60,000 members in construction, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, education, emergency services, and transportation. We will continue to fight for better workplaces and better lives.

On this Labour Day that is like no other, CLAC is honoured that you chose us as your union. We are Better Together.
