Friday, December 1, 2017 Labour and Employment Law Updates in Ontario Newsletters Bill 148, which overhauls sections of the Labour Relations Act and the Employment Standards Act, passed on November 27, 2017. The bill increases the minimum wage to $14 per hour on January 1, 2018, and to $15 per hour on January 1, 2019. This change will matter to apprentices. The bill also enhances rights for workers in the areas of paid emergency leave, enhanced minimum statutory vacation time, rules about work scheduling, and equal pay for equal work. The full impact for construction workers isn’t known yet, but CLAC’s researchers are conducting a thorough analysis and will share it with reps, stewards, and bargaining committee members to ensure that we’re bringing the most up-to-date information to the bargaining table.
