King Nursing Home Employees Unanimously Ratify New Contract with Wage and Many Other Improvements

BOLTON, ON—Employees of King Nursing Home Ltd., a long term care home based in Bolton, Ontario, unanimously ratified a two-year collective agreement providing them with wage increases, improved benefits, and enhanced premiums.

The employees are represented by Healthcare and Service Workers Union, CLAC Local 304. The union has represented the home’s employees since 1987.

The more than 120-member group, which includes personal support workers, RPNs, RNs, cooks, dietary staff, housekeeping, laundry, janitorial, and recreational therapy staff, secured a 3.5 percent general wage increase in the first year, along with a wage reopener in the second year. The agreement also includes a $2 per hour adjustment to RPN wages and aligns RN rates with Ontario Nursing Association central rates. Additional improvements include increased part-time benefit compensation, enhancements to vision coverage, and the introduction of new evening and night-shift premiums.

Other gains include improved sick leave provisions and, for the first time, sick leave for part-time employees.

“We’re really excited to have reached an agreement without going to arbitration,” says Judith Jackson, CLAC representative. “We were in line for it, and who knows how long that could have taken, so it’s great to have an agreement in place now—a good agreement that members voted for.”
